Mukolytic activity of bitter melon leaves (Momordica charantia L.) as a cough medicine ABSTRACT This research was conducted through several stages including extracting of bitter melon leaves, making pare leaf powder and making effervescent tablets. This study aims to utilize pare leaves as a natural product to be a material that has high economic value and can be efficacious as a cough medicine, adding the mechanism of cough treatment by using the mucolytic test and increasing the safety and benefits of bitter melon as a cheap and easily available cough medicine. This study uses the CBP (Complete Block Plan) method with 2 factors. The first factor is maceration time with 3 factor levels of 4 days, 5 days and 6 days, respectively. The second factor is the concentration of binder, 1%, 3% and 5% respectively. Parameters observed included microcapsule yield, microcapsule characteristics, microcapsule water content, weight uniformity test, fragility test, tablet hardness test, soluble time test and mucolytic activity test. The results showed that bitter melon leaves had the potential for effervescent tablets which were efficacious as cough medicine, while maceration and binder concentration had an effect on fragility test, tablet hardness test, soluble time test and mucolytic activity test but did not significantly affect weight uniformity test. The best treatment combination of A1B1 with maceration duration and the concentration of binder of mucolytic activity test were 34.11 - 34.17 dpas, fragility test 1.42% - 1.77%, tablet hardness test 4.98kg - 4.96kg, test soluble time 8 , 83 minutes - 9.02 minutes and weight uniformity test 1.86% - 1.89%.
